“Rejects” (1994-ongoing) is an apt introduction to Dumas’ practice. The South African painter, who relocated to Amsterdam in 1976, has secured her place at the forefront of contemporary painting for her uncompromising approach to the body and incisive portraiture.
I became interested in Marlene Dumas’ work when I started doing life drawings in my practice. I was originally just using pen and pencil with my life drawings however I became intrigued by the sue of watercolour and the boldness of it by her pieces therefore started exploring with more mediums. I liked how expressive her work is and that the bodies aren’t stereotypically perfect.
